Was the tv series "Happy Days" based upon the comic character "Archie" (as in Archie Andrews?)?
A friend told me that it was however, I disagree as to the totality of copyright - however, feel it could have been
'loosely inspired".
It was indeed loosely inspired by it, but I don't quite understand what you mean by the "totality of copyright". If you read the Wikipedia page on Lost In Space (the original TV series) you will discover there was a long series of litigations over whether it was based on a comic book called "Space Family Robinson". Copyright Law is not clear about some things, and they could legally have done a direct swipe, so long as they renamed the characters (Hearst vs. Dirks).
During the fifties and sixties there were other shows such as Gidget and the Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (featuring Bob Denver before his marijuana arrest -- hey, the guy who played DA Hamilton Gray on Perry Mason was busted for pot) which very clearly were as inspirational to Happy Days.
